All soldiers survived, 4 crew drowned.
G5 190 Squadron
The squadron was formed with Catalina lbs at Sullom Voe on March 1 1943. It is unlikely that they carried unit letters. It disbanded on December 31 1943. On January 5 1944 a new 190 Squadron formed at Leicester East and equipped with Stirling IVs. These became coded G5 and L9.
Much confusion has surrounded these codes, possibly because of confusion with 5G and L9 were in use with 295 Squadron early 1946 and between April und June 1946 with 297 Squudron. In June 1945 HALIFAX'es replaced the Stlrllngs, eg, G5:U-PN293.
L9 190 Squadron
Reformed on January 5 1944 at Leicester East with Stirling IVs. Converted to Halifax Ill's in May 1945, eg, L9:D-PN286. Disbanded in September 1945.
