Stirling LJ896 was shot down during the approach to Rees and crashed around 4 km NW of Goch:

NAA A705 File A422091 F/O Allen: "Three minutes from the target the A/C was hit by flak. Fire was reported in the Engineers compartment and the Port Outer Engine. S/Ldr. Spear gave the order to abandon aircraft and four of the crew baled out in the following order. Sgt. T. Hull F/Eng. F/O H. Allen B/A. F/Lt. Henderson W/AG and F/O D.L. Saunders Nav. They were picked up by a British Patrol and returned to England. After baling out F/Lt. Henderson and F/O Saunders saw an aircraft crash and presumed it was their own. Nothing further has been heard to date concerning the Pilot S/Ldr. Spear RG Sgt. Wilson".
