  • TARGET RUGSUNDØ - GUNS This operation was unsuccessful owing to the fact that the aircraft would not maintain height. The wing bombs were jettisoned and the remaining brought hack to `BASE.
  • TARGET MAALOY ISLAND This aircraft failed to return but it was subsequently learned thet Sgt Smith was rescued by our NAVAL forces
  • TARGET MAALOY ISLAND This operation was carried out from WICK. This daylight operation went exactly as planned and the-aircraft, in conditions of unlimited visibility, dropped it's smoke-bomb containere in the allotted position at 09.00 hrs.- from 100 ft Fire from flak shipse hit the aircraft four or five times and the W/Op and rear-gunner returned the fire. One shell-burst jammaed the ruddar but the aircraft was flown hack to BASE without mishap.
  • TARGET RUGSUNDØ Unfortunately the smoke-bombs overshot into the water, but a low level machine-gun attack was carried out from 30'. on shore battery position. and the guns were silenced. Many HUNS beeing seen scurrying for shelters
  • TARGET MAALOY ISLAND This aircraft successfully laid the smoke-bombs from 30 ft,, at 08:59 hrs, in the desired position. Inaccurate light flak was encountered.
  • TARGET RUGSUNDØ – GUNS The target was successfully attacked from 150’, at 08:30 hrs. Unfortunately, the navigator was seriously wounded by enemy flak, but neverless, he gave the pilot a course home before he became unconciuos. Landing was made SUMBOROUGH after first-aid had been administered by the wirelss operator and the rear gunner.
  • TARGET RUGSUNDØ The smoke-screen was successfully laid in a dive attack at 08.57 and dens smoke arose. The gunners also shot-up a machine-gun emplacement and silenced it.
  • TARGET RUGSUNDØ - GUNS This aircraft, in good weather with unlimited visiblity, attacked the gun-positions from 800'. All bombs were seen to burst around the gun-positions and the wireless operator fired off 400 rounds at the Obeservation Hut and Gun Emplacements.
  • TARGET MAALOY ISLAND This aircraft was also successful in laying a smoke-screen to cover the landing operations, droppping it's containers from 100' at 08:50 hrs. All bursts on the required point.
  • TARGET MAALOY ISLAND This aircraft falied to return and nothing at all was heard from it.
  • RAF 114 Thirteen aircraft took off from Lossiemouth for this task, supporting a "Commando" raid on VAAGSO MAALO in Norway. This is the first time the Amy, Navy and Air Force have operate in conjunction with each other in an assault on the enemy. Just before the target was reached 2 ME109's were observed and followed our aircraft over the target, but did not approach closer than 1000 yards. All our aircraft attacked with 250 lb GP. 11 second delay bombs and 25 lb incendiaries at 12:02 hours from a height of 250 ft, Many bursts caused by direct hits were observed on runways, and wood and debris thrown into the air. A direct hit was observed on an ME109 which was taxing to take off, and the machine was seen to turn over nose first in clouds of snoke. Inaccurate heavy flak and fairly accurate tracer was experienced over the target - the majority coming from the South side of the island. Aircraft "H" (Sgt Davies-Sgt Ward, Sgt Kitley) was seen to crash into aircraft "Z" (Sgt's Fisher-Williamson-Fletcher) at a height of 250 ft. after bombing - probably due to flak. Both of the aircraft were observed to fall into water in a small inlet of HERDLA ISLAND. Eleven aircraft machine-gunned gun emplacements, machine-gus posts, but huts abd W/T Mast. Just after leaving target 3 ME109's were seen 1500 yarde away but did not attack. Ten aircraft took photo and eleven aircraft returned, safely to Lossimouth without any casualties to the crews.
  • RAF 114 Message received from the Air Officer Commanding in Chief ,Bomber Command Sir RIchard E C Pericre, K.C.B., DD.S.O., A.F.C., stating that he had seen the photographs and reports of the attack on HERDLA Aerodrome and "114 SQUADRON CAN BE PROUD OF THEMSELVES FOR A FIRST CLASS JOB.
  • RAF 110 Attack ennemy shipping of the Norwegian coast between OBRESTAD AND FLEKKEFJORD. The leader attacked a single ship of approx. 1500 tons SW of EIGEROE. Attack was well delievered from 50 ’, with 2 x 500 lbs bombs. One burst against stern of ship causing amittance of black smoke. The second A7c wa was caught in a slipstream and its wing touched water, as a result of which the p ilot jettisoned his bombs then climbed to 2000’, to sert course for home. The 4 other A7C all of which are missing, broke aways from leader near EIERGOE to attack a convoy of 3 or 4 ships about 4 miles south. One ship was seen to sink with their stern in the air. Only two Blenheims were seen to leave convoy, and one made a bad landing in the sea after beeing attacked by an enemy fighter. The other made a goood landing in sea with its port engine i n fire
  • RAF 404 Engaged 3 ME109F. A/C claimed 1 probably
  • RAF 248 Escort for Naval force in relief of other aircraft. 3 HE111’s escorted by 2 ME109 approached convoy and «J» and «N» claimed one HE111 each. A/c «C» returned base as guns would not fire
  • RAF 235 Unkown task - ORB Missing
  • RAF 236 Beaufighter Y-E-U led by F/Lt Lees airbborne from Sumboruigh to escort c/v- A/C. When over target at 12:58 sighted HE111 which was beeing engaged by a/c «U». «U» seems to break away and was last seen to trouble badly and fall away . A/C «Y» attacked hte E/A which immidelately jettisoned the bombs which fell witout exploding. «Y» then attacked from port quarter getting in a long steady burst from 400 yds, ito the belly of a/c. «»Y» got in second burst and smoke was now pouring from port engine othe HE111 and wwas now turn over and dive vertically through the smoke. «Y» followed him down.,but did not see him again He must have gone straight ito sea. The return fire from the E/A throughout the engagements was poor. A/C «Z» (Frecker) on the same sortie at 12:35 hrs sighted 2 a/c and immidelately called up section leader but get noe reply, so broke away and climbed to investigate and identified a/c as beein 2 HE111 in line eastern. A/C «Z» made a attack from 500 yds, the e/a then ofto east. At 12:55 hrs. An HE111 was seen approaching the c/v from east at a heigh of 10.000’, so «Z» climbed to position between e/a and the sun. The e/a was just over the c/v when «Z» maded them attack from 300 yds, smoke beagn to pour from starboard engine of e/a who broke away before another attack could be made and wwas last seen going east losing heigh rapidly and obiously in damaged conditionm A/C «Z» then resumed patrol until relieved. A/c «U», Baseby, on same sortie ater attacking HE111, was last seen to fall away after wobbling badly, failed to return base
