STS 22 Rhubana Lodge,

Arisaig House, Arisaig, Inverness-shire was the headquarters of the Group A section of the SOE training scheme for agents. After initial selection, agents would be sent to one of the Group A schools for their para-military training. These were all in the Western Highlands of Scotland, which during the war was a Protected Area, off limits to visitors. Even residents needed passes to come and go as well as having their mail censored. Much of the actual training happened at other locations, the houses and lodges requisitioned by SOE in the area to the north.

The Paramilitary Schools, or Group A Schools, were opened between November 1940 and June 1941. Numbered STS 21 to STS 25c, they were based in 10 shooting lodges in the Arisaig and Morar areas of Inverness-shire. The surrounding countryside, which includes Loch Morar and Loch Nevis, is rugged and remote, ideal for the commando-style training that was provided.

"Paramilitary school under the command of Major AD Balden as of 1 January 1943.214 For a period, Rhubana was used as a W/T Preliminary School to ease the pressure on accommodation at STS52. This arrangement enabled a reduction in the time required to train radio operators by substituting the five week paramilitary course with a combined wireless element.215"
