We took off from RIVENHALL in a a Stirling aircraft at 18:50 hrs on 2 Nov 44 on a special mission to NORWAY.

  • At about 2315 hrs the aircraft began to ico-up.
  • At 2325 hrs the containers were jettisoned, but the packages remined in the aircraft.
  • At 2345 hrs the aircraft went into a steep dive and the pilot gave the order to abandon aircraft.

  • S/Ldr Bolton. I baled out at 23:45 hrs and landed at pinpoint
    7° 50 E, 60° N. in NORWAY. As I landed I saw a flash which I took to be our aircraft exploding. I hid my parachute harness, and, carrying my parachute and wearing my mae west, I walked S. E. About 20 minutes
    later I met F/O. CHAPIN and W.O. DALTON of my crew.
  • F/O Chapin. I baled out at 23:45 and landed at pinpoint 7° 50 E, 60°N. in NORWAYï. Just before I landed I saw a flash which I assumed to the crash of our aircraft exploding. I hid my parachute, mae weat and harness and then heard a shot. A few minutes later I met W/O Dalton. We saw a light over a hill, and after a few minutes we walked towards it. The light disappeared, and a few minutes later we met S/Ldr Bolton.
  • W/O Dalton. I baled out at 23:45 and landed at pinpoint 7° 50 E, 60° N. in NORWAY. Just before I landed I saw a flash of our aircraft. I began shouting, and a few minutes later I was joined by F/O Chapin. I buried my parachute and harness in the snow but retained my mae west.
  • S/Ldr Bolton, F/O Chapin and WO Dalton. When the three of us were together we discussed the light we had seen and decided to investigate it. We thought it might be another member of our crew using a torch. A few minutes later we met Lt Hicks of our crew, who came from the opposite direction from the light. Lt Hicks had lost hiws flying boots when he baled out, so we bound his foot with stripes cut from his parachute.
  • The four of us decided to locate the souce of the light as we thounght it must be C/Gapt Surplice. We walked SW towards the place we had last seen the light. After about an hour we had not located anything, and, as it was bitterly cold and very stormy, we decided to seek shelter. We walked NW into a valley, and at 06:00 hrs on 3 nov we lay in the lee of a rock for about an hour and a half. We then hid the remains of Lt. Hicks parachute and the mae west in the snow. We used the rubber inflators of Lt. Hicks mae west to make a covering for the strips of parachute on his feets.
  • At 07:30 hrs we began walking North and then East along the valley, and we arrived at the "Mår" vann. 60.10/08.10E at 10:15. We saw a hut on the opposite shore of the l ake, which was not frozen, and we decided to walk around the lake to do it. At 15:00 hrs we had not reached the hut owing to waterfalls. During this time de had travelled West and SoutWest. We then decided to abadon the attempt to reach the hut and to return to the place wheree we had first arrived at the lake. We had seen some rough timber and we thought we might be able to construct a shelter from it.
  • At about 16:30 S/Ldr Bolton and F/O Chapin straggled and became separated from Lt. Hicks and W/O Dalton.
  • S/Ldr Bolton and F/O Chapin. After we missed Lt Hicks and WO Dalton at 16:30 hrs, we wandered around until 22:00 hrs searching for them. We then lay in a lee of a rock until 23:30 hrs, when we returned to our search. We walked until 04:00 hrs on 4 nov and then lay in the lee of a rock until 06:00 hrs, when wew walked East along the edge of the lake. At 11:00 hrs we reached a deserted hut which contained a small quantity of dry wood, some dried fish, coffe beans and a dozen potatoes. We lit a fire and cooked a meal. At 12:00 hrs, Lt Hicks and W/O Dalton arrived at the hut and shared our meal.
  • W/O DALTON 3-6 Nov Lt. HICKS and I spent the time from 1630 hrs on 3 Nov until 1200 hrs on 4 Nov searching for S/Ldr BOLTON and P/O CHAPIN. We met them in a hut on the edge of the lake.
  • S/ldr BOLTON, P/O CHAPIN and W/O DALTON. We and Lt. HICKS searched the hut and discovered a pair of rubber coloshes, which lt. HICKS wore. Also a small quantity of flour, barley, semolin and oatmeal. We found a newspaper publishedin RJUKAN ( 08 40 E 59 50 N ) which indicated our approximate position. We remained in the hut until 6 Nov because of a very bad snowstorm. On that day at0800 hrs we began walking East along the Southern edge of the lake. We made very slow progress, owing to snowdrift. At 1600 hrs we saw a light in the distance, but we were too exhausted to travel further. We cut down a few saplings with an axe we had brought from the hut and constructed a rough tent with S/Ldr BOLTONs parachute. We remained in this tent until 0600 hrs on 7 Nov. We then made fire of the saplings and boiled some coffee.
    At 0730 hrs we continued walking East and arrived at a hut on the shore of the lake at 1100 hrs. We broke into the hut and were about to light a fire when Lt. HICKS saw a boat containing two men comming towards us across the lake. The four o fus went outside the hut and a few moments later, one of the men in the boat shouted in English: «Are you English?». We answered «Yes». The man then asked the seniorof our party to og to the water’s edge and said that the others must og into the hut. S/Ldr BOLTON went down to the shore.
  • S/Ldr BOLTON. I went down to the shore and one of the men in the boat, who spoke English, told met hat he had bad news about the two members of our crew. He said that on the previous day ( 6 Nov ) F/O MORROW and F/O MESLEY of my crew, had called at his home in a very exhausted condition. Both were slightly injured. He stated that he had given them food, butt hat the Germans ha arrived soon afterwards and taken them away.
    His explanation for the arrival of the Germans was that F/O MORROW and F/O MESLEY had been seen in the district by foreign forced labor and their presence reported to the Germans. The Germans had gone to his home, as it was the only occupied house in the area. He told met hat the whole area had been compulsorily evacuated by the Germans six months earlier. I learned subsequently that this man was regarded with suspicion by the Norwegian underground movement, and that when we made contact with us he was on his way to report to them regarding the capture of F/O MORROW and F/O Mesley.
    The men gave me bread, margarine and dried milk and said that he would send more food later, He said that we should remain in the hut and that he would signal by torch from the opposite shore of the lake at 1900 hrs. He would signal «D» if a German patrol was near, and «OK» if the area was clear. In the latter event he would come to us. I returned to the hut and joined the others. The boat containing the two men then went away.
  • S/Ldr BOLTON, F/O CHAPIN and W/O DALTON. We stayed in the hut, and at 1300 hrs the second man who had been in the boat returned alone with venison, potatoes, bread, dried milk and margarine. This man did not speak any English, he also brought a typewrited sheet of instructions, written in English, and addressed to members of the RAF. It stated that we must not light a fire or move about outside the hut, and that someone would come to us as soon as possible. The question was asked where it would be possible for an aircraft to land and pick us up. We answered the various questions on the form and gave it back to the man who then went away.
    We remained in the hut until 1905 hrs when we saw the signal «OK». We then lit a fire in the hut to cook a meal. At 2000 hrs the English-speaking Norwegian arrived by boat accompanied by a member of the underground movement. It was arranged that this second man would escort us to a barn, where we would stay pending further arrangements.
    At 2230 hrs the six of us crossed the lake by boat and the guide escorted us to the barn, where we arrived at 0400 hrs on 8 Nov. This man also arranged for a search to take place for G/Capt SURPLICE and our jettisoned containers. We remained in the barn until 2245 hrs on 10 Nov. During this time we were supplied with food by the farmer who owned the barn.
    At 1330 hrs on 10 Nov the member of the underground movement came to the barn and gave us a sketchmap of the road from the barn to TINN (8 50E 60N ). He instructed us to be at a bridge on the outskirts of TINN at between 0130 hrs and 0200 hrs of 11 Nov. He also supplied each of us with a cap.
  • He left the barn at 2245 hrs on 10 Nov and walked to the bridge at TINN, where we arrived at 0210 hrs on 11 Nov. We were met by three Norwegians, who took us to a rendezvous. The remainder of our journey was arranged for us.

Sammendrag og punkter i kartet:

To fly var ute denne natten, resten var cancellert på grunn av vær. Det andre flyet leverte lasten og bakkemannskapet bekreftet det.

Surplice og navigatøren hadde nok mistet retningen. Iflg mannskapet var de en gang over Tønsberg, men HALTER 6 var ikke betjent, og de fant ingen lys. Været var elendig, og flyet mistet høyde. Lasten måtte bare droppes for å komme høyere.

De visste ikke hvor han slapp, men de kom oppover mot Uvdal før han droppet lasten. Flyet var katastrofalt lavt, og bakken lå over 4000'. Da flyet letnet ble kursen satt mot Egersund, men atter ble flyet tvunget lavere på grunn av is.

Da var kl 23:25. 20 minutter senere ga han mannskapet ordre om å hoppe. De 4 første hoppet omtrent likt, men de to siste ble ørlite senere ute, og havnet lenger nord, ved Kalhovd. Disse gikk, og gikk sørøstover og senere nordover mot Kalhovd Turisthytte. Se LILLA strek på kartet. Der ble de imidlertid tatt til fange av tyskere.

Ved å følge de 4 sine beskrivelser av retning og tidspunkter, SW - NW i 1:30 - N i 2:45 og fant et vann og Øst i ca 5 timer, tilsammen ca 10 timer går de denne tiden ca 11 kilometer. Det er storm, snø, en med fallskjermsilke som sko, og ingen ski. De fant først ei hytte, (Lys rød linje) (SANDBEKK) hvor Hicks fikk seg et par kalosjer, deretter videre og hvilte ut i et "fallskjermtelt" før de gikk videre og fant neste hytte etter ca 12 kilomter til. Det var CAPPELEN hytta. De fikk hvilt seg ut, og så kom det 2 mann fra bygda roende med båt over vatnet, og de organiserte flukten videre. På andre siden av vatnet kom de inn på en vei, da tyskerne bygget ut vannkraft i området. Derfra var det 5:30 marsj fra hytta, via båt over vatnet og ned i MÅRDALEN der Gunnulf Mårdalen hadde ei utmarksløe hvor han hentet høy på daglig.

Der holdt de seg noen dager, før de skulle møte nede ved brua over Gjerdøla ved Ålykkja. Avstand fra Løa til Brua er 11 kilometer,men her var det hestevei og delvis bygdeveg, så det gikk ganske greit, de brukte 3:25 timer inkl båt over vatnet. Deretter med bil til Tinn.

Så dro de med HYDRO sin administrasjonsbil, til Gransherad. Fra Attrå gikk veien Øst for Tinnsjø via 344 til Gransherad. Deretter ned til Strupa ved Notodden og overnattet hos forfatterinnen Ingebjørg Mælandsmo. Dagen derpå bar det med hest og slede over Reshjemheia, over til Bø i Telemark. Der måtte de overnatte i et nedlagt sagbruk, for ingen turte ha de i hus.

Deretter med bil til Ulefoss - og til hytta på Lensmannsøya.

Mandag f.k. (20.11) kommer, hvis alt klaffer, 5, 6 mann med båten fra Dalen. Det kommer en mann fra båten bort til Deres mann, som skal stå på bryggen med en avis under armen, og spør: - Er det Einar Pedersen?
De overtar samtlige for videre transport som følger: Med bil til den hytten som ligger i nærheten av sellen, for overnatting. Derfra til den gamle leir i Kilebygda, som De skal ha kjennskap til. Her, på den gamle leir blir De møtt av folk fra 1701, som overtar den videre transport. Det presiseres at alt må gjøres for at denne transport går sikkert. Det er engelske flyvere som skal over til S...

"Et engelsk fly var falt ned i fjellet ovenfor Rjukan den 2. november. Det var et rekognoseringsfly, og med flyet var sjefen for den engelske rekognosering over Syd-Norge. Det ble for meget is på vingene. Syv mann hoppet ut i fallskjerm. Tre av dem forsvant, blant dem sjefen, men fire kom etter å ha flakket om i fjellet i fem dager, i forbindelse med Milorgfolk fra Rjukan. Etter mange videverdigheter og flere transporter kom de til «gutta på skauen» i Bamble, hvor det oppsto dramatiske hendelser som sannsynligvis ledet til den raske beslutning å få dem videre til oss. lalt hadde de da ligget i dekning ti forskjellige steder. Vi ble enige om bare å bruke fornavn - sjefen het Ken, de andre Bob, Red og Mike. "

De dro fra Lensmannsøya til ULEFOSS igjen, deretter via Fjærekilen - Rugtvedtmyra - Gonge Gård og leiren GONG, men da tyskerne kom måtte de rømme videre, så ferden gikk til FJØLBU, så til HALLINGSETER, og til LANGKJERR. Her ble de en hel uke, de øvrige enkelt overnattinger i hovedsak. Derfra til Trossvik i Fossingfjorden, hvor de tok noen dager før de kom seg videre til Schweigårdsholmen, på grunn av islagt Fossingfjord. Schweigårdsholmen var venteplass for flyktninger til Sverige. Det tok lang tid før de kom seg videre derfra. Det bodde flere flyktninger de, og de turte kun å fyre i ovnen etter mørkets frembrudd, samt at det etterhvert ble lite mat. Været var elendig, og ingen muligheter å komme seg videre. De som organiserte flukten hadde bare småbåter, og strekningen over til Bohuslen kunne bli lang i dårlig vær.

De kom seg omsider avgårde rett før jul med full båt, MK AUGUSTA. Men, været var dårlig, de fikk motorstopp, havnet oppe ved Ferder, og ble så tauet i land til Sandefjord. De prøvde å få tak i ny båt i Sandefjord, men måtte tilslutt ta imot et tilbud om å komme på land og overnatte hos Kaptein Brun på Hystadveien. Dette skjedde på natt til Lille Julaften 1944. Side 72

Deretter ble de Lille Julaften flyttet til et hus på GRANHOLMEN. Bernt Forsberg og en kamerat skulle komme med 2 båter, en skulle gå over til Strømstad med de norske, og Bernt i den andre sammen med de engelske til Edsviken ved Hafstensund - deretter skulle de fraktes videre til den engelske konsulen i Gøteborg.

De kom til Edsviken på Julaftens morgen, og ble mottatt av Påhlsons med åpne armer. Det ble varlset til Gøteborg og de drog videre på kvelden med "Juletoget" til Gøteborg. Der sto to fra det Britiske Konsulat og kjørte de til Konsul Sommerville. Flygerne hadde fått nye klær og sovet i en god seng i et varmt hus, og Marshal Tedder, Sjef for RAF arrangerte et coctailselskap for guttene. 2 dager senere var de flydd til England via BROMMA og LEUCHARS.

Den 28 desember (torsdag) skrev flygerne en hilsen til Kaptein Brun og familie. Se bilde her. underskrevet med Baby, Småen, Alfred og Paganini.
