"On the night of January 29, the 856th Squadron crews of Lieutenant Kuntz and Lieutenant Walling took off at 1817 hours for a Carpetbagger mission to Norway. Immediately thereafter, a blinding snowstorm set in, preventing flying all over England. Another three missions scheduled to Norway had to be scrubbed. Radio contact was attempted in an effort to call them back to land at a diversionary airfield before everything was completely socked in, but contact was never made and the two crews proceeded to their targets without
knowing what faced them upon their return.
The pinpoints were found, the reception lights identified, and the drops made, then the airplanes turned homeward. At 0300 hours
as they approached the Scottish coast they picked up their call signals and learned that England was completely closed. A break in weather soon occurred at Leuchars, Scottland, however, and the two crews were able to land there without incident after all. A total of 121 sorties had been scrubbed from the 38th Group and Tempsford operations because of the weather, and the completion of their missions by these twocrews came as a surprise to OSS and the other Carpetbagger units."
