*Tempsford lost two Stirlings on sorties to Norway on the 8th/9th. Pit Off Louis Ouelette RCAF and his No 138 (SD) Sqn crew in LK198 crashed in bad weather over the North Sea en route to Norway on operation Puffin 2, and Fit Lt Frederick Ford and crew in LJ993, carrying two Norwegian agents,
disappeared without trace on operation Crupper 11. However, poor weather conditions failed to stop 16 Stirlings from No 620 Sqn flying supply sorties on the 15th.
Agents by Moonlight:
"There can be little doubt that night the appalling weather conditions, low cloud, icing at low level and thunderstorms, were responsible for the loss, on their outward journey, of two 138 Squadron aircraft and their crews. F/Lt F J Ford, flying Stirling LJ993, vvith two agents, Peter Deinbull and Arne Gjestland, twelve containers and eleven packages on board for CRUPPER 11, a target very roughly 100 km north of Oslo,And W/O L A Oullette, RCAF, flying Stirling LK198 with twelve containers and six packages for PUFFIN 2, very roughly, 25km to the north of Oslo. It is assumed they came down into the sea the names of the two crews appearing on the Runnymead Memorial. It had been a terrible price to pay for the delivery of only 22 containers."Flights of the forgotten:
"The weather was becoming steadily worse and on 8/9 November it created havoc among the operational crews. No 161 Squadron put up seven and No 138 Squadron seventeen aircraft, all to Norway. Only S/L Read of No 161 was able to battle through the foul weather to deliver 22 containers to a 'Bit T DZ. More dangerous was S/L Brogan's situation when lightning struck his No 138 Squadron aircraft, temporarily blinding him. His bomb-aimer had to take over the Controls until his sight recovered; he too aborted and brought his five agents back to base. Two other crews failed to retum, probably victims of the weather conditions; both were from No 138 Squadron;W/O Ouellette in Stirling LK198 and F/L Ford in LJ993. losses for the night; They were not the only Stirling EF234 of No 196 Squadron, flown by F/O Norton, failed to retum from a Dutch operation."Til Sted
